Explore the Frankfort Community

Frankfort, one of the furthest south communities within the Chicago area, is still only about 36 miles away from the downtown core of the windy city.

In 2010, the number of residents had nearly doubled in just ten years to reach a population of just under 20,000 people. This was because of the fantastic real estate market, safe streets, quality schools, and the allure of Chicago being nearby. Today, that growth and excitement continues, with the community of Frankfort being well known for its incredible lifestyle.

Life in Frankfort means having everything you need while appreciating the small-town life. The residential streets are safe and quiet, with many residents even choosing to explore and commute on their bikes. The Trails of the Southland is a series of biking trails designed to connect people to other communities within the area as easily as possible.

The Old Plank Bike Trail is a great example of that, a 21-mile recreation and nature trail. It’s also a chance to explore the surrounding area, a lush landscape that has everything from drylands, wetlands, oak wood forests, and open prairie. It’s another example of small-town living, ideal for retirees and families looking to settle down.

The residents of Frankfort celebrate new ideas, and much of what makes Frankfort special is the appreciation of their rich history.

History of Frankfort

The first permanent non-Native settlement established Frankfort in 1831. The area was mainly inhabited by those of English and Scottish descent. Before them, the area was home to Potawatomi and Sac and Fox tribes.

The area was indeed named after the German city of Frankfort, after one of the early settler’s favorite cities. Shortly after being first established, a railroad was built and running by 1879. A residential grid, schools, and a business district plan were put in motion.

Today, many of the old roads and railroads can be seen today, and the same goes for the interesting historical buildings that still stand. The Historic District is a popular destination by many, and a fun way to spend the day for the residents here.

Besides the blast from the past on a self or guided tour, there are also eclectic boutiques, eclectic shops, and amazing dining options in this significant part of the city.
